Camera advice and filming support; What do I do when I need it?
Sep 7th
Video filming and photography can be a complex task these days. It is not just the camera itself, there is a computer, software in post production and often the internet for sharing your photos and videos involved. What do you do, if you if you can’t get the results you want, or the whole setup doesn’t work at all? Or you just started and don’t know what to buy or set it up.
Of course, there are specialists for computer sales and service, camera sales, less for camera repairs and video editing. What do you do, when you don’t know the cause of any setup issues, or you not sure, what you need to accomplish a certain task in the most effective way. What I mean here is, often you can’t tell, if the problem is caused by camera, computer or software.
When you are in the market for a new setup, you don’t need the most expensive camera, the fastest computer and most sophisticated editing software to publish a short holiday video on U-Tube.
The thing is, once you go to a camera-, computer- or software retailer, you will find, that their area of expertise is just what they sell in the shop. To make things worse, they try to push you towards the promotion of the week, which is not necessarily what you need. Advice from friends and family is often outdated or reflects any sales person and brochure advice, which is most of the time biased towards a certain product.
In case you have an hardware issue with your camera, an internet search perhaps reveals, that other people have a similar problem and may talk about a solution, but to follow through and rectify your issue is a whole new story altogether.
Once you have found a camera repair centre and call it up for advice, in most cases you can’t get past the receptionist, who suggests to book it in for a quote, which costs between $50 -$100.
This could be a tricky situation if you have an older camera, where this fee is already a third or a quarter of the replacement value of the camera. If you do go ahead, the chances of an expensive repair bill or even an uneconomical repair is possible. Of course it doesn’t have to be this way, a simple repair or an adjustment could rectify your camera problem.
I have spoken to a lot of people who didn’t do anything and left it unrepaired for a few years. Once they heard about ALL-CAM, they took advantage of the ‘Free Estimate’ service to sort out their camera problem. Here is the good news: besides very, very competitive rates ALL-CAM Cameras and More gives free assessments and repair estimates.
ALL-CAM /e-Study takes it’s even a level further. On our blog website you find ‘Free online Camera advice’ many free videos and articles around the topic camera care, how to… filming tips and tricks and much more.

Sunset Photography with Impact
Aug 23rd
Sunset and sunrise scenes can look quite spectacular whit the different shades of red and unique cloud patterns. Timing is of essence, since light conditions can change sometimes by the second.
Challenge
During sunset the diminishing light can make objects and people appear like silhouettes.
To make things worse, Pint & Shot cameras in ‘Auto mode’ can fool you with regards to the picture exposure. Let’s say you frame a person or a group of people against an underexposed background, the flash wants to compensate the exposure. Since most inbuilt flashes work only indoors or within a couple of meters effectively, the picture as you see it on the screen will be recorded darker.
Solution
There are a couple of things you can do to optimise results with your camera. The easiest and quickest solution is to turn off the flash altogether. This way you capture the scene at least the how you see it on your preview LCD-display.
Secondly you might be able to enhance the recording or achieve a special effect with a certain exposure preset and/or tripod.
OK, that is nothing new for most of you. Here is a trick for instant and outstanding results. It is not Photoshop in post production.
Trick
If you have a pair of sunglasses, place it in front of the lens and check out the LCD screen on your camera. Depending on your sunglasses, you can see a spectacular sunset on your camera before it is happening for real. This way you have a much better control the cameras exposure and see more definition in persons and objects. Start to experiment early during sunrise and sunset period, as some sunglasses can make a serious impact on colours an overall exposure. You may get the best shots while the sun is still up or just starting to set in the horizon. Wait some minutes after the sun has disappeared. Often the afterglow of the sun reveals the most amazing cloud patterns.
Summary
Please keep in mind that any twilight shots can be difficult to get right. Shots in magazines and TV are taken with professional cameras, manual adjustments and often enhanced in post production. So if you don’t have the equipment, time and knowledge, go ahead and use the sunglasses. If you don’t tell, probably nobody will notice it.
Next time you shoot sunrise or sunset pictures, try it out and brag about an incredible sunset you had experienced.
You always can take a picture without glasses to show the difference.

Know your camcorder
Step1 – Know your camera to maximize capabilities
Complement your film education by adding a base of technical knowledge.
You don’t have to know how the engine under the bonnet of your car works to be a good driver, nor do you need to know how a camera functions to take a good photograph or produce a video.
However, quite often good results are left to luck. To have more confidence and consistent good results in film making, it helps to know how your camera functions. By knowing the limitation of your equipment, you don’t have to waste time on experiments to make a certain scene work and look good. You know exactly what to do with your equipment, to achieve the desired result with video and sound.
Other advantages of the right camera Know How:
- To be able to rectify any little hiccups with your Equipment
- Camera Care and Damage Protection
- Choosing the Right Camera for You
- Enhanced Communication with Professionals
- Increased Confidence with Equipment
- Awareness of Equipment Limitations
So what should I know about my camera to be able to tick all the boxes above, isn’t it just a matter of reading the user manual of the camera?
The operation manual is certainly a good start and is a ‘must’ when you really want to utilise all features of your camcorder. However, it just covers a fraction of the topics listed above.
Keep in mind, that the camera is only one tool in the production chain. What happens when you need to change it? Suddenly a different camera can be a challenge to operate. You need to have a broader understanding of the whole concept in order to choose and adjust the settings on the camera to capture the best of the scene.
You can compare your cameras user manual with a city map. It only fits for the one model and no other. Your technical knowledge, on the other hand, works more like a compass, it supports you in every situation.

Part1 Know your camera to maximize capabilities
Take your holiday memories to the next level! With the help of a little audio device
Jun 7th
If you are like me and want to enjoy the moments and holidays, running around with a camcorder looking for good vantage points and do video filming is just too much. I prefer a small digital still camera, which fits in my shirt pocket and take snap shots and do some video filming with this camera, if I feel like it.
Video filming requires some preparation and is really the way to go, when you want to capture any stage performances, film moving objects and capture the sound, which goes with it.
When you think about it, it is often the sound, which can make a huge difference in a video production. So all we need is a perfect sound, which goes with our snap shots and short video clips.
This is exactly what we will do.
High quality sound Slide Show – Pictures, Video
I will explain, how to add high quality stereo sound to your holiday slide show with the help of a little highly versatile audio recorder. So the next time you take part in a once in a lifetime experience, take your audio device and place it as close to the action as possible to capture the perfect sound and use the camera independently to take as many snap shots from different angles and vantage points as you can. If you want to, use the movie feature of your camera to capture short video clips without worrying about the audio.
At home in post production keep using your favorite slideshow software or video editing program, just add the sound of the audio recorder for a spectacular slide show / movie experience.
Caution!
For any video clips, the audio recorder needs to be synced with the camera or cut and shift the audio timeline to the appropriate video clip in post production.
So how do we put it together?
Now here comes the real advantage of the setup. Let’s start with the part you perhaps thought of already:
- First you open our favorite video editing program and import the pictures and video from the camera and add the relatively poor sound track from the camera onto one of the audio tracks.
- The stereo sound of the audio recorder goes onto the other tracks of the editing program.
- Now here comes the trick, use the sound track of the camera as a reference to synchronize the audio recorder sound tracks of the little video clips. Add the sound of the audio recorder, wherever you think is appropriate. When you are happy with the result, you may remove the camera sound track.
- Once you have completed your fine tuning and editing, you can end up with amazing results in your overall production.
When this is done properly, the audio from the voice recorder gives the impression as it is recorded by the camera.
Sharing video on the internet YouTube – Step by Step
Jun 7th
Everybody does it, from kids and vacation travelers to pros. It is fun and it’s easy.
Here are some quick tips to getting started.

Putting Your Video Online
Go to www.youtube.com and click the Sign Up button at the very top of the screen.
When you are done, you will get an email asking you to confirm your registration, and then you are in. - Preparing Your Video
YouTube will accept most popular video formats: AVI, MOV, MPG and WMV. - Uploading Your Video
After you have logged into YouTube, click on My Account at the top of the screen and then select Videos. From there, click on the button that says Upload Videos and enter a description for your video (Standard accounts are limited to 10 minutes or 100MB). This description will help people decide whether or not they want to see your video, so be as descriptive as possible.
Here you can also select options to make your video public or private and to allow people to comment, make video responses, rate your video, embed your video on web pages and blogs. Click next and use the browse button to find the video on your computer. YouTube takes your uploaded video and converts it automatically to a flash animation – this may take several hours or just a few minutes.
When your video is on the YouTube servers, you will see URLs you can send to people, so they can see your video directly. You will also find the HTML code necessary to embed your video on a web page or blog.
Sharing and Watching Your Video
There you go. Clicking on My Videos will take you to your collection of online videos. You can email the URL to all the people in your Address Book, you can embed the video into a web page and you can share, save and re-watch favourite videos of your own.
HDD and Flash-memory Video to DVD – The easy way!
Jun 7th
This method is ideal, when you need to produce a DVD quickly without a computer.
First of all use the camera features to delete scenes you don’t want and put the ones you like to keep in order. If your camera has a feature to shave off the beginning and the end of a scene, do so. Of course you can connect your camera via fire-wire or USB to the computer, open moviemaker or your favorite editing program, start importing your footage and you are ready to go. However, if you don’t want to do too much editing, the fastest and easiest way is to use a standalone DVD recorder hooked up to a TV monitor.

First generation copies are not too critical, so you can connect the camera with the AV cables instead of the digital connection. Set the recording settings in the menu of the DVD recorder for best quality and you are ready. Simply press playback on your camera and record on the DVD recorder.
Summary
For multiple DVD copies record the tape onto the HDD of your DVD recorder first and use the fast copy feature to burn multiple DVD’s. Additional copies are produced in a fraction of the time!
Once you have completed the DVD and you are happy with the result, you can go ahead and delete the scenes on the camera to make room for new recordings.
